She entered the New York Institute for the Blind around 1835 and taught there from 1847-1858. In 1858 she married a musician, Alexander van Alsyne, who was also blind. It has been estimated that Fanny Crosby composed around 6000 hymns in her lifetime. Turned down for overseas service on medical grounds, with his wife Margaret he has been involved for thirty years in outreach to ethnic Asians in England, first in London, then in Bradford, where they still live. They are members of the missionary society, SIM, and of Sunbridge Road Mission Church. Lionel has written several published articles on missionary priorities, and one book, ‘Not At Home - British Muslims and the Gospel’. He is convinced of the need for long-term commitment to missionary work - hence his new book, With Flaming Zeal. |

Foxe, John |
(1517-1587) Born in Lincolnshire, England. He studied at Oxford and was ordained by Nicholas Ridley in 1550. On Mary’s accession in 1554, Foxe fled to Strasbourg, taking a manuscript designed to be the first part of his history of the reformation. He had it published there and then moved to Basle, where he completed his book and had it published in 1559. Returning to England, Foxe had the first English edition published in 1596. Four editions appeared in his lifetime, profoundly influencing Elizabethan England. Since then it has never been out of print. After a long life of piety and usefulness, Foxe died on April 18, 1587. |

J. D. (John Daniel) Jones (1865-1942) could have been F. B. Meyer’s successor at Christ Church in Westminster, but faithfully remained the beloved pastor of Richmond Hill Congregational Church in Bournemouth, England, for 39 years. D. L. Moody heard Jones speak in Boston and invited him to speak at Northfield on many occasions. Jones’ health remained good until 1941, when anemia began to sap his strength. When given the news that his sickness was fatal, Jones accepted the news with his usual poise and courage. Martin Luther (1483-1546), German Reformer, was converted to Christ from the priesthood of the Roman Catholic Church by reading the book of Romans. He became professor of theology at the University of Wittenburg in 1512, and retained that position until his death in 1546. (1847-1929). Born in London of a wealthy family of German ancestry, he graduated from London University in 1869 and completed theological training at Regent’s Park College. He helped launch on his memorable campaigns the then unknown D. L. Moody.
In 1881 Meyer opened Melbourne Hall in Leicester, a centre of social and evangelistic activity which was Meyer’s abiding memorial. Meyer was a popular convention speaker at Northfield in the United States, Keswick, England and Portstewart in Northern Ireland.

Dwight Lyman Moody (1837-1899), famous evangelist, was born in Northfield Massachusetts. In 1879 he established a school for girls and two years later a school for boys. In the summer of 1880 he began a summer conference ministry on the grounds of the Northfield Seminary, and in 1886 he started the Chicago Evangelisation Society, later to be known as the Moody Bible Institute. Throughout his life however, Moody's greatest contribution was evangelism. Some say that he travelled more than a million miles and addressed more than 100 million people to win them for Christ. His last evangelistic campaign brought a severe illness, and a few days later Moody went to be with the Lord. |

George Campbell Morgan (1863-1945) was converted to Christ under the influence of D.L. Moody. Moody’s ministry made such an impression on the young Morgan, that at the age of thirteen he preached his first sermon. Morgan later became a Congregationalist minister, pastored the Westminster Chapel in London, assumed the position of director of the Northfield Bible Conference after Moody’s death, and taught weekly Friday night Bible classes, which were attended by thousands. Charles Reynolds is a “Son of the Soil” of Northern Ireland. He joined the military service in World War II as a member of the Royal Air Force, which took him to the Indo-Burma theatre of operations. After ordination as a minister in the Methodist Church, he was appointed as a missionary to India where he and his wife served in a remote forest area. In 1995, Queen Elizabeth II honored him by appointing him as an OBE, and in 1998, the citizens of Ludhiana honored him with the award of a “Talwar” (Sword of Honor) for his forty years of support of the Ludhiana Christian Medical College. He soon became a leader of the evangelical party in the Church of England and was noted for his doctrinal essays and polemical writings. Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892), the "Prince of Preachers" is known as the greatest Baptist preacher to grace the English scene.
